With deep sadness, we the family, announce the passing of Gerald Dominey, age 87, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Gerald passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2015 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Deer Island, Nfld. on April 17, 1928, he was the son of the late Samuel and Deborah (Crewe) Dominey. At a very young age, Gerald fished on the Grand Banks off Newfoundland. He later began working with CN Marine and then Marine Atlantic aboard the vessels until his retirement.
Gerald was an active and faithful member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney, where he sang in the church choir and was a member of the Married Couples Association. He was an associate member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #19, North Sydney, where he enjoyed playing darts. Gerald enjoyed playing crib and was an avid Toronto Blue Jays and Maple Leafs fan.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth (Reid) Dominey; his two daughters, Marilyn (Louis) LeBlanc, North Sydney, Maxine Dominey, Dartmouth; his three sons, Richard (Joanne), North Sydney, Stuart (Karen), Barrachois and Sterling (Wendy), Petawawa; his 12 grandchildren, Leona (Jeffry) Hunt, Janice (Christopher) MacDonald, Geralyn (Joe) Brown, Patricia (Rick) Ahle, Douglas (Dorè) Dicks, Ruth Ann Dominey, Erin (Dean) LeBlanc, Robyn Dominey, Jennifer Dominey (Bob), Amy Dominey (Chad), Jenna (Duane) Stanley and Adam Patterson and also his 18 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is his sister, Vera Generaux, Winnipeg and brother, Clyde (Marilyn) Dominey, London, Ont. and nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Gerald was predeceased by his sisters, Clara, Carrie and Ethel and brothers, Thomas, Harold, Garfield and Cecil.
There will be no visitation by request. A funeral service for Gerald will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Rev. Julio Martin officiating. Burial to follow in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to An Cala Unit, Palliative Care at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital or to St. John the Baptist Anglican Church.
