Marilyn Theresa MacVicar, R.N.

Born In: Sydney

Passed on: October 5th, 2015

It is with broken hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of our dear sister and aunt, Marilyn MacVicar, age 72, at home surrounded by her loving family and her loyal canine companion, Marley, after a brief illness on Monday, Oct. 5, 2015.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Collin and Ada Duxbury.
As a registered nurse she dedicated her life to helping others, considering it a vocation, not a job. She was a natural born leader. Adventurous in spirit. Emergency nursing was her passion and took her from her roots in Cape Breton, to the west coast of California to Chicago, Northern Ontario, Halifax and finally back home to her beloved Cape Breton, where she was employed until very recently. She had a quick wit, dry sense of humour and loved a good laugh, especially with the girls at work. Her colleagues and friends have described her as tough and strong willed, intelligent, confident, sassy, caring, funny and selfless, “they don’t make them like that anymore.”
Marilyn’s family was precious to her. We all refer to her as the “Rock” because she was always there for everyone. Quietly supporting, guiding, teaching and giving of herself without ever asking anything in return, by far, the most selfless person ever. She had an innate ability to make people want to work harder and to be the best “You” you can be.
Her faith was strong, her opinions were as strong, and she would never back down from a good argument.
Marilyn is survived by her sister, Betty MacVicar; brother, Lawrence; nieces, Mia (“special girls” Olivia and Emily), Ann Marie (Tom), Nancy (Monty), Debbie (Ralph), Darlene, Eileen, Ann, Diane (Steve), Jenny (Megan); nephews, Allan (Corien), Peter, Robert, Bradley, Donnie (Shelly), William, Lawrence, Colin, Barry, Collin (Mary Ann), many great nieces and nephews, as well as her faithful canine companion, Marley.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters, Jean and Peggy; brothers, Carl, Angus and Allan 'Bub'.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Oct. 8, 2015, at the SW Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Funeral mass will be take place 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 9, 2015 at St. Theresa’s Church, Sydney with Fr. Alex MacLellan officiating.
Burial to follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks, with a reception to follow at Marilyn’s home, 20 Brookview Dr., Sydney.
Although our hearts are broken words cannot express how blessed we are to love and to have been loved by our amazing Aunt Marilyn.
“If love could have saved you,
you would have lived forever.”
