George DeMings
DeMINGS, J. George, 98, of New Glasgow, died peacefully Nov. 23, 2015, in Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, QEII.
Born in New Glasgow on April 16, 1917, he was a son of the late William and Christy (MacKay) DeMings.
George was in the Royal Canadian Artillery in the Second World War and served in northwest Europe and Germany.
Following the war, he married Marie Robson on Nov. 16, 1946, and they were together this month for their 69th anniversary.
He attended Acadia University in Wolfville and Carleton University in Ottawa. He was a former editor of the Eastern Chronicle in New Glasgow, before beginning a career in advertising in Toronto and then London, Ont. He moved to Halifax in 1967 and then to Laggan, Pictou County, in 1968 where he and Marie extensively renovated an old farmhouse. George became head teacher at the pre-vocational school in Stellarton. His real love was writing novels and children’s stories. He was also exceptionally fond of the cats and dogs that shared his life.
He is survived by his wife; a son, John, Digby; a daughter, Janice (Ken Ward), Halifax; grandchildren, Chris Wyman, Calgary; granddaughter, Sarah (Nick) Morris, Lower Sackville; and four great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Billy; a brother, Lloyd; and two sisters, Bette and Barbara.
The body has been cremated. Burial in Lorne Street Cemetery, New Glasgow, at a later date.
