Douglas Harry "Sonny" Lowther
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Douglas Harry "Sonny" Lowther, age 74, of Springhill. Sonny passed away at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre on Saturday, November 21, 2015.
Born in Springhill, NS, he was a son of the late Monson and Rose (Morrissey) Lowther.
After a lengthy illness, Sonny retired from Correctional Service of Canada with 30 years service. Sonny always had an entrepreneurial spirit with lots of ideas for inventions and new businesses. He and his brother Carman owned and operated a successful take-out restaurant in Petawawa, Ontario called the Pink Onion. In the 60's Sonny owned and operated one of the first public training facilities for scuba diving in Boston Mass. Throughout his life, Sonny enjoyed hunting and fishing. In later years, he enjoyed taking long drives in the country, visiting old hunting sites and his favorite fishing holes that he enjoyed in his youth. He also loved to go with friends to the gun range and practice shooting. Above all, Sonny enjoyed his friends and family. He loved to reminisce about the 'old days'.
He is survived by his wife Marilyn Terris Lowther, Ontario; daughter Sherri Lowther-Russell, Moncton, NB; siblings Carman (Elizabeth) Lowther, Longboat Key, Florida, Patsy Barlow, Bass River, NS, Peggy Hadley, Truro, NS; nieces Maryanne Jackson, Bonnie Dunphy; nephews Jim Lowther, Tim Barlow and Peter Barlow.
Arrangements are under the care and supervision of A H Brown Funeral Service, 5 McFarlane St., Springhill, NS (902-597-2361) from where a time of visitation will be held 7:30 to 9:30 pm on Thursday, November 26, 2015. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 2 pm on Friday, November 27, 2015 with interment to follow in the Hillside Cemetery, Springhill.
Donations in memory of Sonny may be made to the Salvation Army, or a charity of one's choice.
