Isobel Florence MacAulay, 96, of Baddeck, Cape Breton, died peacefully on Feb. 2, 2016, in Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck, surrounded by family and close friends.
Isobel was born in Estmere, Cape Breton; the eldest child of Neil Hugh MacDonald and his wife Dolena Catherine (Tye) Matheson.
She was predeceased by her loving husband and partner, Dannie MacAulay (2009), son Daniel, brother Campbell MacDonald, sister Marjorie Voorhees and son-in-law, Don Rough.
Isobel is survived by children, Marjorie Dawn (Linden), Hillsborough, N.B.; Charlotte (Vince), Sackville, N.B.; Debbie (Neil), Baddeck; Scott (Terri), Baddeck; Kim (Tom), Halifax,: grandchildren; Neil and Alex Rough, Meghan, James, Daniel and Campbell Barrett, Sarah and Daniel Bell, Matthew, Alison, and Shannon MacAulay, and four great-grandchildren, Emma, Campbell, Meara, Tyler 'Ty.' She is survived by sisters-in-law, Ruth MacAulay and Evelyn MacAulay and many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. Isobel will also be sadly missed by her best friend, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Buster Brown, and special friends, Betty Roberts and Chloee Knickle.
Isobel enjoyed a variety of careers throughout her lifetime. Following high school, she graduated from Nova Scotia Normal College, and taught in Cape Breton until the beginning of the Second World War. During the war, she worked in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve, training signalmen and decoding messages. When the war was over, Isobel returned to Baddeck and worked in the doctor’s office for many years, until finally taking a job at Inverary Inn, where she fell in love with innkeeping. She thoroughly enjoyed entertaining guests and developing friendships. In 1973, Isobel and Dannie purchased the Inverary and Isobel was influential in many hospitality organizations, both locally and provincially. She and Dannie operated the Inn until 1992 and remained active in the business for many years after. Isobel was recognized by both the tourism industry as well as the Cape Breton Business community.
She was a life member of Alexander Graham Bell Club, a 60-year member of Victoria Chapter #19 OES, belonged to the Greenwood UCW, and was the last living member of the ‘Freight Shed Gang’.
Isobel loved Estmere, the Little Narrows Tea and Sale, poetry, and her gardens. She had a wonderful sense of humour and was always happiest when around others. Isobel loved life and it loved her right back.
Visitation will take place in the MacAulay Conference Center, Inverary Resort, Baddeck, on Friday, Feb. 5 from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Eastern Star service will take place at 6:45 p.m. on Friday. Funeral will be held on Saturday, Feb. 6, at 2 p.m. in Greenwood United Church, Baddeck, with Rev. Alison Etter officiating. Reception will follow at MacAulay Conference Center.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to L’Arche Cape Breton or to the Victoria County Memorial Hospital Foundation, Baddeck.
Family would like to thank the Staff of Victoria County Memorial Hospital for their compassionate and competent care. Also thanks to Dr. Carlyle Chow and Dr. Roland Genge for many years of wonderful care. Thank you to the staff of Home Care and Rev Alison Etter. Most of all, a special thanks to her amazing caregivers: Paris, Betty, Gloria, Grace, Melissa and all of the others who took such wonderful care of Isobel in her home. Funeral under the care and direction of MacAskill's Funeral Home, Baddeck.
