Little Harbour - John Albert Fraser, passed away Thursday, February 11, 2016, in the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Hospital with his wife and family by his side.
Born in Little Harbour on July 7, 1935, he was a son of the late Albert and Alice (Rhynold) Fraser.
Leaving school at an early age, John joined the Army, serving 3 years with the Royal Canadian Regiment in London, ON, including a tour of duty in Germany. Returning to Nova Scotia, he obtained his Volkswagen mechanic licence and worked in several garages in Pictou and Antigonish Counties.
John was also a former member of Millwright Union 1178. In 1979, John went to work as a heavy duty mechanic with the Dept. of Transportation, retiring in June 1995. In his spare time, he liked to hunt, fish and spend time at the cottage on Lochaber Lake. There he enjoyed boating or having a good game of cards. As a former race car driver at the former Mountain Race Track, the last few years he enjoyed following the sportsman races (especially no. 55) in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
John is survived by his wife, Isabel (Forbes); his children: Scott (Crystal), Indiana, USA; Heather McGowan, Saint John, NB: Sandra (Vernon Borden), New Glasgow; children by choice: Dale Richardson (Kim Jones), Riverton; Bob Richardson (Frances “Kitt”), Lyons Brook; Cindy Peppler (Randy), Spruce Grove, AB; Cathy Richardson, Calgary, AB; Kelly Fraser (Jim), Gairloch Road; grandchildren: Jade and July Beth Fraser, Kali and Jared McGowan, Krista Fraser, Darrell and Chrissy Richardson, Sherrill and Colin MacKeigan, Nick and Nathan Fraser; great grandchildren: Aiden, Richie, Audrey, Ayla, Layla and Kera. He is also survived by brother and sister-in-law, Rev. Jim Forbes (Rev. Carolyn Palmer), Hubley; brother-in-law, Alden Chisholm (Irene), New Glasgow; and the mother of his children, Betty Jennex, Trenton.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by grandchildren: Glenna Fraser, AB; James Fraser, USA; sisters: Jean Scott, Muriel Chisholm; brother, Donald in infancy.
Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 pm Sunday in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service 11 am Monday in Little Harbour Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Lorne MacLeod officiating.
Donations in his memory may be made to Church Brook Cemetery, Pictou County VON or Aberdeen Palliative Care Society.
