Vera Helen Starratt – 97 of Wolfville, formerly of Avonport, passed away peacefully on April 21, 2016 in the Wolfville Nursing Home. Gram “S” was born September 5, 1918 in Newport, Hants County and was a daughter of the late Norman and Maude Fenton. Vera was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of the Avonport Gospel Hall. In her younger years she was a sales clerk for Star’s Clothing in both Wolfville and Windsor. She was a housekeeper for several families and kept boarders for many, many years. She also worked at the Grand Pre Winery. She was a very gifted lady and felt very blessed to share her poetry and musical abilities. Piano, organ, accordion and the spoons were her most popular to play. She taught us how to laugh with stories of days gone by, taught us how to bake by cleaning out the fridge and to love by being herself. Our Gram “S” was loved by so many more than just her family and she will be missed by many, but her legacy lives on and on and on. She is survived by daughters, Norma, Shubenacadie; Gale (Kelvin), Avonport; Corrinne, Creston, BC; one son, Corrie (Sandy), Woodstock, ON; sister, Ferne Pearl; 17 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, 20 great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Stanley; two sons, Laurie and Ross; four grandsons, Timothy, John, Bradley and Kevin; two brothers, Reg and Ross; three sisters, Jenny, Norma and Hazel; one son-in-law, Walter. Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, April 23, 2016 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 24, 2016 in the Avonport Gospel Hall, Paul Kenny, Jim McKinley and Josh Morine officiating. Burial took place in the Avonport Gospel Hall Cemetery. Special thanks to Aunt Ferne Pearl and family for the love and special care for over six years. Also special thanks to the staff at the Truro Hospital, Ivy Meadows, Beaverbank, Hants Community Hospital and especially the Wolfville Nursing Home. Their compassion and care for Gram “S” was extraordinary and we appreciate all of the staff who came to love her too. Donations in memory may be made to the Cystic Fibrois Society or the charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. For on-line inquiries and condolences please visit www.whitefamilyfuneralhome.com.
