Nancy Jean Chisholm, of Little Harbour, Pictou County, passed away at the Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow, N.S. on April 23, 2016.
Nancy was born in 1931 to the late Alex and Alice (Manning) Chisholm. She lived on the family farm with her husband William Roff and her much beloved dog Angus.
Nancy attended Fraser's Mountain School and New Glasgow High. She then went on to study X-ray Technology at the VG Hospital in Halifax.
During her time at the VG, she became the technical head of the X-ray therapy department. She left Halifax to work at the Kingston General Hospital in Ontario where she eventually became the director of the Eastern Ontario School of X-ray Technology. During her time in Kingston, Nancy, along with her husband Bill, owned and loved several Standard Bred horses, which she raced at Frontenac Downs.
After retirement, Nancy returned to Pictou County, N.S., where she enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Nancy took great pleasure in working with Bill on the beautiful gardens that he designed at the farm. She spent hours picking wild strawberries, which she then made into jam to give to everyone at Christmas. She hooked several mats using her grandmother's mat frames. She was a regular at The Coffee Bean, The Dock and Louis' Good Used Clothing, where she spent many happy times and where the staff were so kind to her.
Nancy was a member of the Liberal Party of Canada, the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists and the Ontario Harness Horse Association. Nancy also supported the Nature Conservancy of Canada by giving them an easement on her property to ensure that the land will be protected for the benefit of wildlife and future generations.
She is survived by her husband, Bill; her nephews: Sandy Chisholm (Kathleen) and Jim Chisholm (Pauline), both of Sydney, N.S.; her nieces: Mary MacNevin of Halifax; Nancy Phelan of Lethbridge, Alta.; and Anne Chisholm of New Glasgow; her sister-in-law, Frances, New Glasgow; four grand nieces: Jennifer, Maggie, Laura and Dawn Marie; three grand nephews: James, Greg and Blair; and four great grand nephews. She was predeceased by her only brother, Blair.
A celebration of Nancy's life will be held from 2-4 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Burial to follow in Lorne Street Cemetery.
