It is with deep sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our father, John Lloyd ‘Jack’ Gillis, age 70, on Monday, May 2, 2016 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in North Sydney on Jan. 22, 1946, Jack was the son of the late Edward and Elizabeth (Gordon) Gillis. In earlier years Jack worked on the Great Lake boats and later in construction as a carpenter, where he became a member of the Carpenters Union. He was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney.
He is survived by his children, daughter, Jacqueline (Dan) Pygiel, Halifax; sons, Tommy Gillis, Sydney Mines, John (Karen) Gillis, Virden, Manitoba, Donald (Tania) Gillis; son, Jackie (Allison) Barrie, Florence; daughter, Jackie Gillis, Sydney Mines; his companion, Audrey Steele; his three grandchildren, Travis Gillis, Cole Pygiel and Kaylee Gillis.
Besides his parents, Jack was predeceased by a brother, Thomas.
The family would like to thank Hospice Palliative Care and special thanks to Dr. Peter Poulos who has been with Da from the beginning.
There will be no visitation. A funeral service for Jack will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
