BRUCE MCBRIDE
1936 – 2016
After 80 years of a life well and fully lived, Bruce McBride passed away on Wednesday, May 11, 2016, at Victoria Hospital, following a long struggle with congestive heart failure. He was an optimistic, helpful, hard-working, and compassionate man, who will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Bruce was born on January 4, 1936, in White River, Ontario, the fifth eldest of eight children. He grew up in Schreiber, Ontario, where he attended school. Bruce married, and when he became a father of two daughters and a son, he embraced his role as a family man. He shared his love for country music, camping, and hunting with his kids, and always tried to make the best of every situation. Bruce appreciated special moments each day, treasuring them as others value material things. His life was made rich by his positive outlook and indomitable spirit. Bruce was a proud union man, first working as a pipefitter in the Terrace Bay Pulp Mill for over 20 years. He left Ontario in 1976 to realize his dream to be a farmer, and found some land near Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. He packed up his family and spent many happy years farming and also working at the Weyerhaeuser Pulp Mill until his retirement. During this time, Bruce endured the death of his 18 year old son, Russell, in 1980. Bruce valued supporting his children and being part of his extended family beyond everything else. His favourite pastime was to travel across Canada to visit family members. He loved to drive much more than to meander, and it was difficult to convince him to stop until the destination was in sight. This relentless travel pace earned him the nickname “Bruce the Goose” because pit stops were only permitted for the most serious bathroom emergencies. Arrival was always a joyous time and a great relief. In his later years, as Bruce’s health deteriorated and his mobility was restricted, long road trips were replaced by appreciating family connections closer to home. In addition to maintaining strong relationships with his daughters, son-in-law, and grandchildren, Bruce was blessed with the companionship of Christine Ferguson, with whom he lived in a loving partnership for the past 28 years. Bruce gave of himself freely and received much in return, because he always knew that the most beautiful things in life were not things at all. Bruce is survived by his partner, Christine, his daughters, Jo-Ann and Dawn McBride (Joe Andreas), his step-daughter, Crystal, his grandchildren, Alexis Krogsgaard (Roy), Taylor and Jon Andreas (Torii Lumsden), his step-granddaughter, Blayke, and his great-grandchildren, Brittney, Carson, Davan and Talia. He also leaves his brother, Doug McBride (Sylvia), and sisters, Shireen Freed and Bea Hutchinson (Ron) with wonderful memories of a lifetime together. Christine’s siblings, Sharon (Paul), Donna and Sandra will also miss Bruce a great deal. The funeral service for Bruce will be held on Friday, May 27, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at River Park Memorial Chapel, 301 River Street West, Prince Albert. Interment to follow at Prince Albert Memorial Gardens. Funeral arrangements entrusted to the care of River Park Memorial Chapel, Paula Hanson, Funeral Director.
