Freeman Thomas Whitty died peacefully in his sleep at home on Monday, May 23, 2016 in his 81st year.
Beloved husband of Flora Anne (Donovan) Whitty, and cherished father of Daryl (Diane), Dana (Liz), Brendan (Sandra), Jeannine Fraser (Mark) and Liam. Loving Grampa of Sarah, Owen, Noah, Charlotte, Rachel, Mae and Xavier. The eldest of 12 children, he is survived by brothers Doug (Judy), Maurice (Violet), Bert (Sandra deceased), Joe (Edie), and sisters Cathy (Basil) Favaro, Lillian (Glen) Pepperdine.
He was predeceased by his brothers Dennis (Ivetta), Barry; sisters, Agnes (Tom) Donovan, Theresa in infancy and brother, Everett in infancy. Freeman is also fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews.
Born in Ingonish Beach, Cape Breton, son of the late George and Gertrude (Hines) Whitty, he graduated summa cum laude from St. Francis Xavier University with B.A., B. Ed., and M. Ed. Degrees. His passion for teaching is evidenced by the countless accolades received over his 40 plus years of service. His devotion to AA and eloquence as a speaker proved an inspiration to many others. He was an avid golfer, and his wizardry with stained glass has added beauty to many homes.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, May 29, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Hennessey Cutcliffe Funeral Home. Funeral mass will be celebrated Monday, May 30 at 2 p.m. from St. Dunstan’s Basilica. Interment to follow at Sherwood Cemetery.
