NICOLL, WARD HALLETT, 97, Clyde River, passed away at home in Clyde River on May 24, 2016. Born June 3, 1918 in Clyde River he was the son of the late John and Laura (MacKay) Nicoll. Ward completed his high school education in Clyde River and worked for a few years in the logging industry with his father. Ward served overseas in WWII from 1941 to 1945 with the No. 7 General Hospital, Canadian Army Medical Corps. In December, 2015 he was awarded the Légion d'honneur by the government of France for his participation in the liberation of France in June, 1944. After returning to Canada, Ward and his wife, Mary ran a successful general store in Clyde River from 1948 to 1979. Upon retiring, Ward and Mary enjoyed travelling across Canada and the United States as well as visiting Hong Kong and Portugal. Ward is survived by his daughters, Pamela (Stuart) McKelvie, Sherbrooke, Quebec; Patricia (Barry) Sullivan, Manila, Philippines; sister, Phyllis Swaine, Barrington Passage; grandchildren, Fiona McKelvie, Robert, Bridgette and John Sullivan as well as many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife, Mary Jane (Nickerson) Nicoll; brothers, Douglas and Karl; and sisters, Hilda and Lulu. There will be a visitation Sunday 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at the H. M Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Barrington. Funeral service to be held at the St. Matthew’s United Church, Clyde River, Monday May 30, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Cindy Dunnett officiating. Interment to follow in the St. Matthew’s Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the St. Matthew’s United Church building fund.
