Frederick Homer Barnhill

Barnhill, Frederick Homer, age 84, Central Onslow, Colchester County passed away peacefully on June 22, 2016 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro surrounded by his loving family. Born on March 17, 1932 in Debert, he was the son of the late Charles Homer and Edna (Lockhart) Barnhill. He is survived by his loving wife, Jean (Langille) of 61 years; son, Frederick “Scott”; daughter, Marianne (Gary) Cullip; granddaughters, Gina (Michael) Peppard, Kelsey MacDonald, all of Belmont; brother, Wendell (Marian); several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sister, Phyllis Putnam. Fred grew up in Debert above the Barnhill’s General Store which was owned and operated by his father, Homer. Fred attended the Success Business College in Truro after which he worked at the Tatamagouche Creamery where he met his wife Jean. He then purchased to own and operate Phil Miller Electric Ltd., Truro and retired at the age of 55. Upon his retirement he operated Tidal Bore Tractor from his home in Central Onslow. He and his wife along with brother, Wendell were founding members of the local Chapter T, GWRRA. Fred also had a passion for pool and golf. He was known for his impromptu speeches, welcoming personality and gentleman like ways. He was always imparting life lessons to his children and grandchildren. In the most recent years he has frequented the VON Adult Day Program where he earned the name “Ambassador” for welcoming new participants to the program. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 27th at 6:30 pm with visitation to follow, both in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro with Rev. Glenn MacLean officiating. There will be a private family interment. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the VON Adult Day Program, Trinity United Church or a charity of your choice.
