It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, son-in-law, uncle and friend, William Alexander ‘Sandy’ Hillier age 74, on Saturday, June 25, 2016, at the Northside General Hospital with his loving wife and daughters at his side.
Sandy was born in Glace Bay, Oct. 25, 1941, he was the son of the late William Joseph and Winona (Matheson) Hillier.
He worked for a number of years at Woolco and later as a corrections officer at the Cape Breton Correctional Centre, until his retirement. Sandy was an active member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, serving as church warden, lay reader, youth group leader and Sunday School teacher, he was a member of the Royal Albert Masonic Lodge and the Cape Breton Shriners. He was a past chairman and member of the Cape Breton Regional School Board and Northside School Board Association, past 1st vice president of the Nova Scotia School Board Association and served on the Board of Directors for the Northside Community Guest Home. Sandy’s favourite pastimes were biking, swimming, dancing, skating, golf and gardening.
Sandy is survived by his best friend and loving wife Mary (LaFosse), daughters Shauna (David) Snow, North Sydney, Tonya Hillier (Ross Krill), Calgary, five grandchildren Makayla and Kiana Snow, Ian, Ryan and Sophia Krill, his brothers and sisters Carrie (Donnie) Donovan, River Denys, Bob (Sandra) Hillier, Antigonish, David (Linda) Hillier, Muriel (Blaine) Kelloway, Terry (Deana) Hillier, all of Glace Bay, and by his mother-in-law Helena LaFosse, brother-in-law Guy LaFosse, Coxheath, sister-in-law Sheila LaFosse, Ontario and a number of nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Sandy was predeceased by his father-in-law Edgar LaFosse, brother-in-law Edgar LaFosse and sister-in-law Heather LaFosse.
Sandy’s family extend a special thank you to Dr. Bill MacDonald and the staff on the 4th floor Palliative Care Unit at the Northside General Hospital for all of their care and support.
Visitation for Sandy will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church in North Sydney with Rev Julio Martin officiating. Burial will take place at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. Memorial donations may be made to St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia or the Leukemia Society. Online condolences may be sent to www.wjdooley.com.
