GANONG, Agatha Covey (Palmer)
Agatha Covey Palmer Ganong was born July 13, 1917 at Ship Harbour, Nova Scotia, the daughter of a lighthouse keeper. She passed away peacefully at Blomidon Court in Greenwich, Nova Scotia on June 22, 2016 at the age of 98. Agatha was always interested in learning. She achieved her education of grades one through twelve through correspondence while growing up at the lighthouse. Agatha graduated from N.S. Normal College. She worked as a reporter for the Canadian Press in Halifax and also for the Halifax Herald and Mail. She also worked as radio news editor for the United Press Montreal and Toronto, during which time she met Winston Churchill. She taught Latin at the Horton Academy for a time. She attended her beloved Acadia University from which she graduated in 1942 with a BA Honours in English, and wrote the Class Ode for her graduating class. In 1948 she completed her BA with Honours in the Classics, then her MA in 1951. She loved her alma mater and continued close ties with Acadia until her health no longer allowed it. She worked side by side there with her husband who was head librarian for many years. Agatha was well travelled. She loved her books and having them around her. She loved reading of all sorts. She eagerly awaited her newspaper each day. She enjoyed poetry and memorizing it. What a memory she had! She wrote poetry and prose herself. She also was a talented artist. She loved birds and enjoyed watching them, even from her window at Blomidon Court. She was active in several local women’s groups and charities including the IODE, CFUW, ACW and Historical Society of Wolfville. She and Harry loved to entertain and enjoyed opening their home to friends and family. In more recent years she and her sister-in-law, Mary Ganong, had a weekly lunch date at Rosie’s Restaurant in Wolfville. She loved her birthday celebrations, especially over the past few years when her mobility was limited. Thank you to those who took the time to come and celebrate with her, it meant so much. The family wishes to thank those who were so faithful in visiting Agatha after she lost her independence. Special thanks to her “executive secretary”, Lucille Trites. Thanks to all care givers and staff at Blomidon Court, Wolfville Nursing Home, Kentville and Middleton Hospitals, Care Force workers, Wolfville Library staff, friends at Acadia University, visitors from the local parish, and even the man with the white beard who showed up as Santa or the Easter Bunny at the appropriate time of year. Memorials may be placed to Acadia University, Heart and Stroke Foundation, CNIB, or to a charity of your choosing. A funeral service celebrating the life of this very special lady was held at St. John’s Anglican Church, Wolfville, on Wednesday, June 29, 2016 at 2:00 PM. There was a reception following with burial to take place in the Willow Bank Cemetery, Wolfville. She was predeceased by her sisters, Gwendolyn, whose given name was Harriet, Katheryn, known as Kay, Clare, and her brother Harold. The love of her life was Harry Winslow Ganong who died too soon on February 9, 1979. She is survived by several nieces and nephews as well as grand-nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. On-line inquiries and condolences may be directed to www.whitefamilyfuneralhome.com.
