James Hyslop Wilson Sanderson
1926 - 2016
It is with sadness that we announce that our dad, James Hyslop Wilson Sanderson, passed away on Tuesday, June 28, 2016, at the age of 90 years. Dad was born in Prince Albert on May 26, 1926, received his education here as well as at St. George’s School for Boys in Vancouver. In 1943 he enlisted with the R.C.A.F., and then the Canadian Infantry Corp as an underage Private; ultimately he served with the 5th Division of the P.P.C.L.I., the Canadian Pacific Force. At the close of the war in the Pacific he was transferred to the Seaforth Highlanders and thus had the privilege of serving with two of the three infantry regiments which had constituted the 1st Division of World War II, attaining the rank of Captain by time of discharge. He then enrolled at the University of British Columbia, graduated with a B.Comm degree in 1948, and then graduating in 1952 from the College of Law at the University of Saskatchewan. 1953 was a full year for Dad as he married his first love Norah, and articled with and later joined a Prince Albert law firm, Fraser, Evasiuk & Sanderson. He was fortunate to become a part of a client’s negotiating team to represent its firm in its dealings in Japan, the Philippines, New Zealand, Australia, Brazil, France, West Germany and England. Since 1953 he continued the practice of law in Prince Albert. In 1981, he entered into a partnership with Ysanne Wilkinson until her appointment to the Bench in 1996; thereafter continuing practice with Terri Karpish until 1998, when he became an associate of the firm Sanderson Balicki & Parchomchuk until retirement in 2014. Over the years Dad served as an alderman, Law Society Bencher, Chamber of Commerce Director, President of Kiwanis, Jaycees, Prince Albert Minor Softball, Minor Hockey, Minto Hockey, and Sask Junior Hockey Associations. Dad was very involved in the importation of Charolais cattle to Canada and establishing of a Canadian herd in France, as well as continuing with the breed at his farm outside Prince Albert. He has received Exemplary Service Recognition from the Law Society, and entry on the Honor Roll of the Canadian Charolais Association. He was very involved in imparting his knowledge, and donating items, on the history of Prince Albert/area to the Prince Albert Historical Society. Dad loved to golf, enjoyed his cottage and years at Waskesiu and Elk Ridge. Dad loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Leigh Keess (Colin), his daughter, Donna Gelysteen (Lawrence), his granddaughters Amy Gutheil (Paul), Erinn Gelysteen (Jim), Erica Miller (Josh), and his great-grandchildren Paityn Miller, Beckett and Bode Gutheil. He was predeceased by his parents Jack and Gertrude Sanderson, and his beloved wife Norah. A come and go Memorial Celebration and Reception will be held for relatives and friends beginning at 4:00 pm. on Wednesday, July 6, 2016 at the Prince Albert Historical Society Tea Room, 10 River Street East, Prince Albert, SK. Interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of other tributes, dad would have wished donations to the Prince Albert Historical Society, 10 River Street East, Prince Albert, SK S6V 8A9.
