Arthur Dennis “Art” Newton – 81, of Berwick, Kings County, passed away on July 16, 2016 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville after a brief but serious illness. Born in Economy, he was a son of the late Churchill and Lila (Spence) Newton. He graduated from Bass River High School and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1955. Following his 10-year career in the service, where he enjoyed a posting in Germany that allowed him to travel throughout Europe and North Africa, he was enrolled in the Bachelor of Science program at Mount Alison University. After his studies, he accepted a position with the Federal Department of Fisheries and later enjoyed a lengthy career with the Department of Agriculture, fondly known as “the research station”. He was an avid sports fan, playing baseball, hockey and tennis in his younger years and later coaching baseball, softball, and fastball teams. In 1981, Art assumed the position of Player Recruiter for the Valley Wildcats Junior “A” Hockey team, a highlight of his coaching career. He was inducted into the Berwick Sports Hall of Fame as recognition of his contribution as a builder of local sports in Berwick and continued to follow the newly formed Berwick Wildcats Junior “A” Hockey team until his death. Throughout his life, he spent many hours with family and friends hunting and fishing, and later playing golf. Art was a committed community member, having served as a member of the Berwick Town Council, Chairman of the Board of Western Kings Memorial Hospital, and on the Board of Stewards of the Berwick United Church. For fifteen years, Art assisted with the organization of the Apple Tree Foundation Golf Tournament for the Kings Regional Rehabilitation Centre and for the past nine years, helped to organize and run the Annual Apple Dome Golf Tournament and Auction. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend and remarked that he would do it all over again if given the chance. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, the former Jeanette Eleanor Gilbert; one son, Craig Arthur (Vanda) Newton, Bedford; and three daughters, Jennifer Lee Vujanovic, LaSalle, ON; Kelly Jane (Leslie) Newton Holman, Middle Musquodoboit; and Roxanne Eleanor (Scott) Manning, Middle Sackville; sister, Violet Perkins, Sackville, NB; brother, Gary (Coleen) Newton, Dartmouth; six grandchildren, Cody Newton, Benjamin Ackermann, Laura Ackermann, Lauren Manning, Alexander Vujanovic, and Rachael Manning; two step grandchildren, Christopher and Emily Holman; nieces, Sharon Kay, Mona Sears, Joanne Fletcher, Beth-Ann Newton, and Jody Foster; nephews, Brian Newton, William Johnson, Scott Gilbert, Paul Gilbert, Gilbert Lewis, Louis Gilbert, Geoffrey Newton and Michael Trefry. He was predeceased by a brother, Denzil. Cremation has taken place and there was no visitation by request. The funeral service, followed by a reception was held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, 2016 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. Donations in memory may be made to the Kings Mutual Century Centre (the Apple Dome), Dartmouth Family Centre, the Canadian Diabetes Association or a charity of your choice.
