Bruce Marling

Born: April 29th, 1921

Passed in: Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada
Passed on: June 8th, 2016

MARLING, Bruce George, 95, husband, father, grandfather, and friend to his community, died peacefully on June 8, 2016 in the Yarmouth Hospital following a brief illness. He is predeceased by his first wife Frances Ethel (Doane). He is survived by his second wife Pauline Eleanor (Crowell), son David [Angela], grandchildren Jonathan [Shelly], Jennifer [Lawrence], Julianne [Cameron], and Jessica [Shane], as well as twelve great-grandchildren. Born April 29, 1921 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to the late George Cleveland Marling and Nettie Maud (Spears), he moved very early in life to Raynardton and was a lifelong resident of this community. Bruce served during WW2 in the Royal Canadian Air Force; however, he remained a country boy who was always happiest at home. In his early years he was taught the value of hard work, and this was reflected throughout his life in all that he did. He worked for Nova Scotia Power for 31 years, retiring in 1981. Retirement allowed Bruce more time to spend on one of his passions, gardening. His vegetable garden was well-known around the community, and he was always quick to share whatever he grew, with his family and friends; his lawn and flower beds were just as important to him and he spent many hours weeding and tending to his plants. He also enjoyed fly fishing for salmon and trout and tying his own special fishing flies. When the snow fell, he could often be seen plowing the driveways along his road, making sure everyone was able to get through the snow. Bruce didn't let his age slow him down, preferring to cut and stack his own firewood well into his 80's. Bruce was happiest when his family was close by. He loved to spend time with his grandchildren. During their younger years, one or more of them would often call to see what he was having for supper, just in case it was better than what was being served at home — he always had a supply of canned spaghetti and sugared donuts for those days! He was very generous with his grandchildren; in their teenage years he made sure that his granddaughters' crooked teeth got straightened with braces, but reminded them that they were beautiful no matter what. He had an endless amount of patience for all of his grandchildren, even when they were complaining while helping in the garden; he would often tease them out of their grumpy attitudes while he worked side-by-side with them. Bruce has requested a graveside service for family only, and will be buried in the Brooklyn Cemetery. The family asks that you make sure you spend as much time as possible with your loved ones, and also to get out there and grow a garden! That is what Bruce would wish.
