Hazel Maitland

Passed on: July 25th, 2016

Maitland, Hazel Alma
October 23, 1919 – July 25, 2016
Hazel was born in a farmhouse in Green Briar, Saskatchewan (Lucky Lake). She grew up there, the third youngest of 10 children – all girls – working at whatever needed doing to help the family. She attended Briar Green School to grade 10 and then went to work as a housekeeper. Hazel married Reg on July 13, 1942 in Riverhurst, Sask. Marjory and Will Wright were the attendants. Hazel and Reg then moved to Darmoody, Sask, where they rented a farm. They stayed there for nine years before buying a farm in Riverhurst and lived there until 1979 deciding at that point to move into town. Mom taught us the value of hard work. She milked cows and sent the milk and cream by train to Moose Jaw. Mom made her own butter – which was one job we always tried to get out of. Mom always had a big garden and she would have to haul water by the pail to make sure the vegetables survived. She canned as much as she could to feed her family over the winter. She always got chickens in the spring, by late fall the chickens were in the freezer. We always knew it was Sunday – lunch was egg salad, buns (homemade of course) and apple pie. And for dinner - roast chicken. Mom taught us to appreciate nature – meadowlarks back in the spring, new calves, the beauty of a spider’s web. Lying in the tall grass on warm summer days and finding images in the clouds, bats that ate the bugs we hated, the patterns on garter snakes, the sounds of the coyotes in the evenings. The flocks of birds in the fall and the wonder of migration in the winter and the beauty of frost on the windows - even if it was cold! Mom was always fiercely protective of her family and was proud of our accomplishments. She would also offer a kick in the butt when we needed it. Mom taught us to be strong and independent women. Mom loved music and singing. We will always remember her yodeling. And who could forget her ‘witches’ laugh?! In her words “Thanks a million for everything”. Mom, your voice will now join dads. I will always hear one of you whenever I need to. Hazel was predeceased by her husband Reg; son Marvin; sisters Marjory, Della, Ida, Mable, Muriel, Edith, Thelma, and Joyce. Hazel will be lovingly remembered by Linda (Marvin), Donna Maitland, and Darlene Law (Bill); grandchildren Scott (Rene), Kim (Jamie), Garet (Jennifer), Candace (Tim), Carol (Geoff), Allan (Theresa) and Sean; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and one sister Melba Molbe. Hazel’s family would like to express their heartfelt thanks and gratitude for all the thoughtful expressions of love and kindness during their time of loss and bereavement. A Service will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, July 30, 2016 at Riverhurst Church (Riverhurst, Sask). A luncheon will be served at the community centre following the service and all are welcome to join. As an alternative to flowers the family asks that donations be made in Hazel’s name to the Canadian Cancer Society (www.cancer.ca) or the Foothills Country Hospice Society (www.countryhospice.org). Condolences may be left for the family at www.snodgrassfuneralhomes.com. Arrangements in care of Snodgrass Funeral Homes – Okotoks (403-938-3111)
