Jean Mintenko
September 26, 1927 – July 27, 2016
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear Mother, Jean Mintenko, (aka Olive Lillian Jean). Mom put her whole heart and soul into her life, most especially when it came to her children and grandchildren. When Mom was in the room there was a joyful energy that was always present. It especially showed in the way she taught her grandkids her favorite songs, rhymes and dance moves. The grandkids always enjoyed going to Grandma’s house. Mom was born and raised in Moose Jaw and lived a full and long life. Mom grew up the youngest of nine children born to William H. and Irene Johnstone. She worked in the family business at the Johnstone Dairies through her teen years. As a youngster, she was well known to bring home all kinds of stray hungry animals. Growing up, her passions were sports of all kinds including skating, swimming, and basketball. Mom did not learn to cook until she married. She ended up being an awesome cook, with one of her specialties being nalysnyky, which was always the hit of the party. She is predeceased by her husband, George (1988), son, Mickey (2003), and daughter, Stephanie (2009), her parents, seven brothers and sisters, in-laws John and Elizabeth Mintenko, and many close relatives and friends. Mom leaves to mourn her passing, her sons: Douglas (Teresa-Marie) and Ralph (Shirley), and daughters: Robbyn (Jeff), Lori (Brad), and Geri (Mark); sixteen grandchildren, and nineteen great-grandchildren. She is survived by sister, Florence, sister-in-law, Helen Simpson, and many extended family members. Mom’s companion, Jack York and his family were a great support in the years after Dad’s passing. Mom and Dad were married October 1949 and farmed in the Moose Jaw area for many years. Their first home together was a renovated grain bin. Mom and Dad were well-known for their huge family Christmas get-togethers with many family and friends, lots of jam sessions, singing, dancing, and a few adult beverages. Mom loved her social gatherings with her family and friends and always welcomed everyone. She loved driving her Cougar with the license plate “Gofer” as Dad always sent her to “go fer” something. Humphrey, her basset hound, was one of her greatest furry companions. The family would like to acknowledge and give many thanks to the compassionate caregivers at Providence Place for the past 51/2 years. Thank you to all of you who were a part of Mom’s life. At Mom’s request, there will be no funeral service. A private, family celebration of Jean’s life will be planned at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Shriner’s Patient Fund, or the Humane Society would be greatly appreciated. Her special sparkle will be greatly missed by all who knew her! In living memory of Jean, a memorial planting will be made by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home. Please sign the memorial register at website: www.wjjonesandson.com (Obituaries).
