Jackson, Robert “Bob” Chalmers, passed away peacefully on August 20th, 2016 at the Northumberland Veterans Unit of the Sutherland Harris Memorial Hospital, Pictou, surrounded by his family. He was 93 years old. Born in Stellarton on September 15th, 1922 and raised in Plymouth, he was the son of the late Robert H. and Annie (MacDougall) Jackson.
He was a veteran of WW II, serving as a Wireless Operator with the Canadian 3rd Division, 9th Brigade. He landed on D-Day at Bernieres-sur-Mer, France, and was further involved in operations throughout France, The Netherlands, and Germany. After returning to Plymouth in 1946 he worked in a number of trades, including as a machinist for 34 years at Trenton Industries. Bob was formerly a member of the Overseas Veterans Association and an Elder at First Presbyterian Church in Stellarton. A proud father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he especially enjoyed Sunday drives, travelling, spending time with his family and he loved any time when he could be out on his tractor, whether it was mowing his extensive lawns or plowing in the winter.
He is survived by his sons, Robert (Margie), Antigonish; Allan (Valda), Churchville; grandchildren Heather (James) Pomeroy, David (Ashely), Allison (James O’Farrell), and Christopher, four great-grand-daughters Sophie, Haley, Ava, and Paige and one nephew Brian (Ruby) Doddridge.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife Roberta (Fraser) (1968), his second wife Isabel (Cameron) (2014), and his sister, Helen Doddridge (2014).
Cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 7-9 pm on Wednesday, August 24th in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow. A private graveside service will be held on Thursday, August 25th in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens with Rev. Charles McPherson presiding.
Family flowers only please. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bob’s Memory may be made to the The Veterans Comfort/Bus Fund c/o The Northumberland Veterans Unit, Pictou, First Presbyterian Church, Stellarton, or to a charity of one’s choice.
