STERNS, James Arthur - 95, passed away August 24, 2016 in the Northumberland Veterans Unit, Pictou, Nova Scotia.
Jim was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia on February 12, 1921, a son of William Henry and Emmaroy Margaret (Smith) Sterns.
He is survived by his wife June (MacPhail) Sterns; daughter, Joanne (Oliver) Baranovski, Squamish, B.C.; and son, Douglas, at home.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brother, Stewart and sisters, Shirley (John) MacKenna and Mildred Dechman; niece, Gwenyth Sterns, and nephew, John MacKenna.
He is also survived by sister-in-law, Jeanette Sterns, nephew, Bill (Elaine), and several other nieces.
Jim graduated from Dalhousie Pharmacy College. Immediately following graduation he joined the R.C.A.F. and served as a wireless air gunner on a liberator bomber attached to the R.A.F. and did coastal command in Ceylon. After the war, he worked as a pharmacist in Bermuda for a year. He then worked in Halifax, Lunenburg, Glace Bay, Truro and Annapolis Royal from where he retired to Braeshore, Pictou County in 1985.
He was a former member of the Pictou Curling Club, The Canadian Legion Branch No. 16 and a ukulele group. While in Truro he belonged to the Kiwanis Club and the Truro Barbershoppers. Funeral will be held at 2pm, Sunday in Pictou United Church with Mike Simmons officiating. A private family burial will be held in Seaview Cemetery. Visitation will be held 6-9pm Saturday in McLaren’s Funeral Home, Pictou.
Donations in his memory may be made to a Charity of choice.
