It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Bernie Degaust on Friday, August 26, 2016, after a brief and sudden illness.
Bernie was and forever will be, known for his warm heart, generosity and the love he gave so freely to his family and friends. Born March 24, 1941, he was the son of the late James and Marguerite (Marsh) Degaust.
He loved life and lived it to the fullest. His guitar and fiddle will echo through the dance halls and kitchen parties of Cape Breton forever and will now be enjoyed in Heaven as well. Bernie is survived by his son, Dougie (Sheila) Degaust; son, Jimmy (Kelly) Degaust; son-in-law Shelly Erickson; grandchildren, Tony Erickson, Timothy Degaust, Jenna Degaust, Damon Degaust and Sonny Josephine Degaust. Also surviving are his sisters, Antoinette Jessome, Gertrude Campbell, Yvonne Leblanc, Agnes Degaust, Anne Capstick and Bernadette Angle. He also leaves behind many friends, including his companion, Phyllis Reid.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Josephine (Harrietha) Degaust; daughter, Wendy (Degaust) Erickson; parents, James and Marguerite Degaust; brother, Cecil Degaust and sister, Sandra Budd. Visitation for Bernard Degaust will be held on Monday, August 29, 2016, from 9 – 10:30 a.m. in J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, immediately followed by a service in St Ann’s Church, Alder Point, at 11 a.m., with Fr. Peter McLeod officiating.
Following the service, a reception will be held at the Alder Point Community Hall for family and friends to reminisce, share stories and celebrate Bernie’s life. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com.
