BURNARD, Elizabeth (Betty) Moses - (b. August 30, 1923 in Dayton, Yarmouth County and passed away Sunday, September 18th, 2016 in Yarmouth)
was born at a time when women were first casting their vote in
federal elections. She grew up in a world forever changed by the Second
World War and the aftermath of the Great Depression. The first of four
children of the late Arnold and Lydia (Ellis) Moses, Betty was raised to
hold out a helping hand and share what she had with those in need. She never
took for granted the freedom to vote or the responsibility to speak up for
what she believed to be right, which extended to advocating for those who
are so often voiceless. During her teaching days, Betty would keep
toiletries and small articles of clothing on hand to ensure all of her
students started off on equal footing. Betty was a strong, independent woman
who, with the adventurous soul of a pioneer, left all that she knew in Nova
Scotia to travel to Saskatchewan to teach as part of an exchange. Although
she had no acquaintances in Saskatchewan when she first arrived, she met her
future husband, Howard (Roy) Burnard, in Saskatoon and following a July
wedding in 1953 Betty and Roy lived near the small town of Theodore for
twelve years before returning to Yarmouth in 1965. As a dedicated teacher,
Betty had a love for children and an enduring belief that education could
empower lives. She loved to celebrate milestones with gifts of quilts,
smocked dresses, and hand-knit goodies, and was always willing to lend her
many crafting abilities to those in need of help or some warmth and
kindness. She loved baking and sharing her famous brown bread and cookies.
Her love, care, and concern touched many lives, and she will always be
remembered as a woman who embodied her convictions and believed in the
importance of community. Betty was a member, for more than fifty years, of
Zion United Baptist Church (Yarmouth) where she sang in the choir, taught
Sunday School, lead CGIT and served on many boards and committees. She was a
lifetime member of the Women's Missionary Society, and was made an honorary
Deacon in 2010. Betty is survived by her brothers Arnold (Hannah 'Anne')
Moses of Calgary, and Victor (Virginia) Moses of New Minas; her children,
Katheryn 'Kathy' (Alan) Mohle of Yarmouth, Linda (James) Wheadon of
Cambridge, and Arnold 'Arnie' Burnard of Hantsport; and her grandchildren,
Adam, Erin, Rebekah, Kenneth and Morgan. Betty was predeceased by her
husband Howard 'Roy' Burnard; her sister Katheryn 'Kaye' Moses; and her
granddaughter Margaret. Visitation was held Friday, September 23rd from
7 to 9 pm at Sweeny's Funeral Home in Yarmouth. Funeral was held
Saturday, September 24th at 2pm from Sweeny's, Rev. J. Raymond Corbett
and Pastor Keith Moore officiatied. A private burial followed in
Riverside Cemetery, Hebron. Donations in memory may be made to Central
School Breakfast Program, Yarmouth Food Bank, Yarmouth Public Library, or
the charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements are under the care and
direction of Sweeny's Funeral Home and Crematorium. Words of comfort may be
forwarded to the family at http://www.sweenysfuneralhome.net/
