Gordon Poole

POOLE, Gordon - 90, Truro, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 27, 2016, in the Palliative Care Unit at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, with daughter, Janice at his side. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Leander and Laura (Hibbs) Poole. Gordon graduated from Glace Bay High School and later Acadia University with B.A. and B.Ed. Degrees. He continued his studies at Columbia University, New York, and in 1956 received an M.A. Degree in Secondary School Administration. He taught at Hantsport High, Glace Bay, Morrison High, Hants West Rural High where he was also Vice-Principal and Guidance Counselor and Central Colchester High where he was Vice-Principal and later Principal. In 1970, he was appointed Supervisor of Secondary Schools by The Colchester-East Hants District School Board, a position he held until retirement in 1984. He was a past President of Maritime Guidance Association and a long-time member of The Nova Scotia Retired Teachers' organization. In November 2000, he was awarded a Life Membership by the Colchester-East Hants Branch of The Retired Teachers' organization. Gordon was an active member of The United Church of Canada and served as an Elder at Brunswick Street United Church for 34 years. He was involved in volunteer work for a number of years with The Maritime Conference of United Church Men and served a term as President. In 2008, he was presented with a certificate of Exceptional Merit for his contribution to The United Church Men by The Conference Men's President and the Moderator of the United Church of Canada. He was a volunteer leader with Scouts Canada for over 50 years, giving leadership as a Troop Scouter, Colchester District Commissioner, and Provincial Training Committee Chairman of a Provincial Committee in producing Provincial training guidelines. In 1978, he was appointed Assistant Provincial Commissioner and in 1987, he headed a committee to plan the very successful Nova Scotia Scout Jamboree and served as Deputy Camp Chief. He received a number of Scouting awards including The Silver Acorn in 1983 for especially distinguished service to Scouting, the United Church Scouting Award, and a 50-year certificate and pin in 2006. In 1986 he organized The Colchester Food Bank, becoming President of the Association and a Director on the Board for over 28 years. In 1987 he was named Truro Volunteer of the Year and received a certificate for exceptional volunteer service from the Lieutenant-Governor. Gordon was a long-time member of the Nova Scotia NDP, serving on numerous local and federal election campaigns in various capacities. He was honored for his volunteer work in the community at a dinner in November, 2010, hosted by The Truro/ Bible Hill NDP Executive. Gordon was an athlete and a member of the varsity basketball team at Acadia as well as a member of the Track and Field team. He enjoyed bowling and reading as well as travelling throughout Canada and dancing with his companion, Elizabeth. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Florence and a sister in infancy. Gordon is survived by his son, David (Marg), Wakefield, Quebec, and his children, Katie (Phil), Laura, and Rob; son, Wendell (Teresa), Toronto, Ontario, and their children, Samantha and Jasmine; son, Ken (Heather), Calgary, Alberta, and their children Carson and Lena; daughter, Janice (Dennis), Truro, and her children, Caitlin and Lucas; brother, Frank (Elodie), Victoria, British Columbia; companion Elizabeth Murray, Truro; two great-grandsons, Jack and Charlie; several nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend a sincere thank-you to the Palliative Care staff at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Dr. S. Singh and the VON staff who have been tending to Gordon while at home. A special heartfelt thank-you as well to his full-time homecare providers, David Howes, Betty Osmond and Glenda Quilty, for their wonderful care, love and support since March of this year. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall - Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where Gordon’s family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Saturday, October 1, 2016. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Sunday, October 2, 2016, at Brunswick Street United Church, 250 Brunswick Street, Truro, Reverend John Parsons officiating. Reception will follow in the dining hall. Interment will be held 2 p.m., Monday, October 3, 2016, in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney. In lieu of flowers, donations in Gordon’s memory may be made to The Colchester Food Bank or Colchester Area Scout Council are welcomed.
