Wilma Anna Menzies

Passed on: October 18th, 2016

Wilma Anna Menzies, 99, passed away with family at her side October 18, 2016, at Celtic Court, her home since April 2015. Born in Bay St. Lawrence in 1917, to Norman and Dolena (MacLean) MacPherson, she lived in Boston and Montreal, before settling in Sydney, where she raised her family with Jack. Wilma was predeceased by her husband, John “Jack” Menzies and brothers, Duncan, Jack, Stewart and Norman J. MacPherson.
She is survived by daughters, Valerie (Jon) Fouts, Jacklynne (Gary) O’Brien and Wilma Menzies; stepdaughters, Marguerite (Doug) Walsh and Mary (the late Bazil) Fraser; special son-in-law, Hal Higgins, who did so much for mom. Also survived by brothers, Gilbert Rod MacDonald and Angus Carleton MacDonald; 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and her beloved grand-dog, Casper.
There are no words to appropriately thank the wonderful caregivers at Celtic Court for their love and friendship. Fiercely independent, mom was reluctant to move into long-term care at 97, but they made her feel special and kept her laughing. She maintained her wit and tenacity to the end. We wish to thank Dr. Anne Frances D’Intino and palliative care nurse, Linda Murphy, who do God’s work every day. Special thanks to Anna MacLeod and Allana Robar, who were like daughters to mom, friend, Leona MacGillivray, the old gang from 503 Charlotte, friend and caregiver Ann (Shaw) Mischiek and neighbour/friend, Wayne Weatherbee.
As per her wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of her life will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Saturday, October 22 at 11 a.m., with Rev. Robert Lyle officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery. Mom loved animals and rescued dozens of stray cats over the years, so to honour her, we request memorial donations be made to the Feral & Abandoned Cat Society at www.faacs.ca.
Words of comfort can be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or e-mail sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca.
