Passed in: SYDNEY, Nova Scotia
Passed on: October 20th, 2016

It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the sudden passing of a great man and pillar of the community, Joseph Alfred King. Surrounded by family and friends, Joe left us peacefully on Thursday, October 20, 2016, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in Lunenburg on October 10, 1958, he was the son of William (Buddy) King, and Joyce Mosher. After the death of his mother, he was raised by special parents Sheila and Merle Barkhouse, until the age of four. At that time, his father married Verna, and they welcomed him back to his family. Joe remained close to all those who helped raise him. Joe was well known and respected in his community of Millville and the wider agriculture industry. Intensely generous, Joe organized the annual Millville Pumpkin Fest, always gave big to charity and did so with a humble and gracious heart. Joe loved as hard as he worked. Alongside his long-time friend, Eldridge King and a loyal crew, Joe made his way from dedicated farm employee at Eyking’s Farm (who considered him family), to successful co-owner and a much loved and admired boss. He could make hours of work pass quickly and enjoyably with his gentle teasing, jokes and guessing games. After many years, his Jamaican crew returns every growing season to work alongside their “Boss”. In 2009, Joe even visited Jamaica to accept the honour of Godfather to his employee’s child Reheem. True loves and lifelong companions, Joe married his sweetheart, Sissy at the age of 20 and they remained inseparable for 36 years. They worked together as a team to build their dream home and raised their cherished son Joey with warmth and love, leaning on each other for strength in the years after Joey’s death.
Heartbroken, Joe and Sissy learned to find joy again in simple pleasures. They spent many wonderful hours taking local road trips on their Harley and driving through the crop fields with their beloved dogs, Maxie and Xena. It brings us some comfort to know that Joe immensely enjoyed his life with Sissy until the end. Joe leaves behind to mourn his loving wife, Sissy; sisters, Christine King (Jude Robinson), Rhonda King, Cheryl Dunphy (Dwayne); brother, John William “Jackie” King (Tracy); brothers-in-law, Henry (Debbie), Cyril (Lokey) and Alex (Sharon); sister-in-law, Pixie (Stewie) and many nieces and nephews. Much to his joy, he was recently reunited with his brother, Wayne Delaney (Monica). Besides his mother Joyce, Joe was predeceased by his son, Joey, mother and father-in-law, Henry and Florence (Lovell) Young and brothers-in-law, Michael, Dave, Charlie and William. Visitation for Joe King will be held on Sunday, October23, 2016, from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. in J.M.Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines. A celebration of his life will take place Monday, at 11 a.m. in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Joe’s memory may be made to the SPCA. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to his family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com. We will keep him close to our hearts always.
