Johannes (Hans)  Plomp

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Johannes (Hans) Plomp age 88 of Amherst on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre in Upper Nappan.
Born in the Netherlands to Johanna (nee Bakker) Plomp and Johannes H. Plomp, Hans served in the Royal Netherlands Army, enlisting at the age of 17, serving for three years in Indonesia.
In September 1948, he enrolled in the police school in Utrecht where he received his diploma and became a police officer. In 1953, Hans, Bep and their family immigrated to PEI where he worked on a farm and later bought a farm of their own. In 1964, Hans became Chief of Police of Borden, PEI and a proud Canadian on Dec. 10, 1964. In Oct. 1968, Hans took over the position of Deputy Chief and later Chief of Police in Amherst. He was past president of the Chief’s of Police Association, past manager of the Midget Bombers Hockey team as well as manager of the Y’s Guys Little League Baseball. He played professional soccer in Holland and coached and refereed soccer in PEI and NS … and that’s real football.
In his later years, Hans enjoyed spending time at his cottage in Tidnish, gardening, and had a great love for pets.
Hans will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Barb (Sobey); sons, Rinie Plomp (Rena), Geary, NB and Ron (Deb) Plomp, Regina SK; four grandchildren, Jason (Caro), Johnathan (Sue), Michael and Tyler (Christine); eight great grandchildren; step-sons, Paul (Kelly) Soontiens, Edmonton, AB, Marc (Leanna) Soontiens, Calgary, AB and Nicholas (Julie) Soontiens, Ottawa, ON; nine step-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.
In addition to his parents, Hans was the last surviving member of his immediate family and was predeceased by five siblings; Conrad, Hank, Janny, Joop and Beppie.
As per Hans’ wishes cremation has taken place and a private interment will take place at a later date.
Memorial contributions in Hans’ memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia, LA Animal Shelter or charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Campbell’s Funeral Home, Amherst, NS (902) 667-9906.
