John ‘Jack’ Nicholson, 76, a resident of Bras d’Or, died peacefully in his sleep next to the love of his life Gloria (King) Nicholson on Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at his home.
Born in Sydney Mines, Jan. 17, 1937, he was the son of the late Archie and Mary Anne (Gillis) Nicholson.
John was a retired coal miner and worked at Princess Colliery for many years. He was a member of St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or. Spending time with his wife, his children, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren was his greatest pleasure in life.
John is survived by his wife Gloria and loving father to his five children, Len (Sissy) Nicholson, Wendy (Paul) Cartwright, Donald Nicholson, Jacklyn Nicholson (deceased) and Warren (Marie) Nicholson; his 17 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his brothers, Donald (Connie) Nicholson, Gary (Alta) Nicholson, Theodore (Ethel) Nicholson, Richard (Charlene) Nicholson, Daniel (Theresa) Nicholson; his sisters, Christina Allen, Florence Ellis, Anne (Fred) Burt, Sandra (Ralph) MacKeigan, Lynn (Lorne) Tait; sisters-in-law, Rose and Chrissy Nicholson and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter, Jacklyn, his sister, Margie (Lorne) MacLean, brothers, Shelby, Melrose, Cavel and Kenneth Nicholson, brothers-in-law Ken Allen, Bill Ellis and Lorne MacLean.
To fulfill John’s wishes there will be no visitation. A private service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, at the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney, with Rev. Jake Andrea officiating. Private burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bras d’Or.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations in John’s memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Canadian Cancer Society.
