With great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved mother and matriarch, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt, Mary Monica Beatrice Quirk, longtime resident of Queen Street, on Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2015, at Miners Memorial Manor, Sydney Mines.
Born in Sydney Mines, April 1, 1919, Mary was the daughter of the late Thomas and Ellen Nellie (Peck) McNamara.
Mary graduated from St. Michael Hospital School of Nursing in Toronto as a registered nurse and continued her studies in a psychiatric training program for six months. She worked at Kingston General and Belleville General Hospital for a time, returning home to Cape Breton where she did private nursing duty for families in Baddeck.
She later worked at Hamilton Hospital, North Sydney and after her marriage, continued private nursing duty for various families and relatives on the Northside. After raising her family, she returned to work at Harbourview Hospital, Sydney Mines for 14 years until her retirement. Mary was a devoted and much loved nurse by her co-workers and patients alike. Her professionalism was exemplary.
Mary was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney. She volunteered at the Northside Community Guest Home, was a member of the IODE and also the Sydney Mines Pensioners Club & Fun Band. Mary loved to travel and visited many places throughout Canada, Europe, United States and the Caribbean. Those who knew Mary, would remember that she had a real flare for fashion, a stylish dresser with impeccable taste which she demonstrated on a daily basis. She is the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by her four children, her son Gerard (Cheryl Gardiner); daughters, Annette Quirk (Glen Crawley), Patsy Quirk (Wendell Musgrave) and Cathie Quirk; her six grandchildren, Louis Sean (Diana) Quirk , Vaughan and Jonathan Reynders, Katie (Gilles) Chartrand, Laura Crawley and Charlotte Crawley (Steven Ritchie); three great-grandchildren, Patrick George Quirk, Kohl William and Blakley Bridget Chartrand. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Mary Fitzgerald, Regina (George) DeCourcey and Margaret Quirk Hood; brother-in-law Ron Quirk and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mary was predeceased by her husband Louis Quirk, her two brothers, Wendell and Thomas McNamara and nephew David McNamara.
Visitation for Mary will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Saturday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass and burial will be held at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Heart & Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society.
