It is with sadness that we must announce the passing of George Elmer Gilbert, age 93, of Athol. Elmer passed away at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre on Sunday, March 1, 2015, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Oxford, NS, he was a son of the late Ernest and Georgie (Wood) Gilbert.
He was a member of the Southampton United Church. He worked as a Section Man for 34 years with CNR. He was a quiet, hardworking man who loved his wife and children. Family was first, and his dedication to his community was a close second.
He will be sadly missed by his daughters, Evelyn Bradford (John) of East Amherst, NS, Edith Gilbert (George Nelson) of Bedford, NS; grandchildren, Chris, Steve, Amy (Albert) and Kyle (Melissa); sister Lois Moore of Parrsboro, NS, and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, the former Edna Dodsworth in 1995; brothers, Lawson, Vaughan and Murray; sister Ethel Gilbert.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St., Amherst, NS (902-667-8777) where visiting hours will take place on Tuesday from 7 to 9 pm. The funeral service will take place at Furlong~Jones Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at 11 am, Rev. Elizabeth Davies officiating. Burial will take place in the Athol Cemetery in the spring.
