peacefully on Monday, June 29, 2015, surrounded by the love of his family and friends - at Katherine House, St. John's. Born in Békéscsaba, Hungary to the late Israel & Rosa Mauskopf (who were taken from him in Auschwitz) Ernie was separated from them and survived four concentration camps. Pre-deceased by his beloved wife of 41 years, Ida (nee Levitz) - together, they proudly ran The Gallery on Duckworth street for 22 years. Dear friend and companion of Kathleen Knowling. Loving father and father-in-law of Randy Mauskopf & Jane McGrath, Sabrina Ullmann & Daniel Mathews. Adoring grandfather of Jack, Iain & Finn, Gabriel & Margot. Predeceased in Auschwitz by his siblings Miklos and Andor and in WW2 military service by his brother Nicolas. Pre-deceased by his brother Eugene and sister Serena and by his siblings and their spouses Hugo & Anna Mauskopf, Ida and Judah Rosenberg, Ibi and Imre Weizner, Ruth, Edie and Robert Cohen and as well as his nephew Peter. Survived by his loving in-laws, Mary Milner and Lorraine & Edwin Schaefer. Proud uncle to nieces and nephews Nicolas & Lisa Milner, Thomas Mauskopf, Kitty Weiser, Carol & Larry Cohen, Leslye and Allan Schaefer. Our heartfelt appreciation to the wonderful caregivers at Katherine House. Our love and deepest appreciation to Ernie's good friends, Jane's parents Elizabeth and John McGrath. Thanks also to his friends at the Synagogue and to the members of the Chevrah Kadisha (burial society) for performing the holy duty of preparing Ernie for Jewish burial. Services to be held at Beth-El Synagogue, Elizabeth Avenue (corner of Downing Street - parking on Downing Street), St. John's on Tuesday, June 30, 2015 at 6pm. Interment immediately following the service at the Cemetery of the Beth-El Synagogue, Blackmarsh Road (next to the Salvation Army cemetery). In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hebrew Congregation of Newfoundland, P.O. Box 724, St. John's, NL, A1C 5L4 or to Katherine House, 90 Lemarchant Road, St. John's, A1C 2H2.
