WILLIAM MILLAR GIBSON ALLWOOD

ALLWOOD, WILLIAM MILLAR GIBSON - William (Bill) Allwood, CA of Fredericton, husband of Mary (Winslow) Allwood, passed away at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital on September 1, 2008. Born April 9, 1923 in Scotland and then moved to Saint John, NB in 1928, his parents Thomas and Elizabeth (Gibson) Allwood and brothers Graeme and Morris predeceased him. Bill served as Navigator-Bomb Aimer in the Royal Canadian Air Force flying on Coastal Command - Convoy Escort and Patrol during the Second World War. At the end of the war, he flew on the "Muskox " expedition as flying officer and served in the Militia from 1946-54 (NB Scottish Regiment and Militia Headquarters). Bill received his chartered accountant designation in 1952 and served as treasurer of the original Hospital Services Commission when it was formed in 1959. He was general manager of Cement Cartage in Havelock from 1965-72, after which he returned to Hospital Services (NB) in 1972 as a Director. Bill retired in 1989 as Assistant Deputy Minister, Department of Health. Over the years, Bill served as treasurer of the Christ Church Cathedral, was a member of the original organizing committee of the Capital Winter Club and was past Lieutenant Governor of Kiwanis (NB). He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #4 and the Fredericton Golden Club. Bill was an armchair sports enthusiast who participated in curling, golf and badminton in his younger years. "Gompy" also enjoyed many, many summers at the family cottage on Maquapit Lake, barbequing for family and friends and making bonfires for his grandchildren. In addition to his wife Mary, Bill is survived by his daughter Diane (Gary) Morrison, grandchildren Kate Morrison and Jonathan Morrison of Fredericton; sisters Winnifred Griffith and Nancy Wootton (Stanley) of Ontario; brother-in-law John (Wanda) Winslow of Woodstock and sister-in-law Elizabeth Silva of Spokane, Washington; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will take place at McAdams Select Funeral Home on Thursday, September 4, 2008 from 4 to 6 pm. A Funeral Service will take place at the Christ Church Cathedral on Friday, September 5, 2008 at 2 pm with The Very Reverend Keith Joyce officiating. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Arthriti Society, the Christ Church Cathedral Restoration Fund or the charity of the donor's choice.
