Marion Elaine (Winstanley) Smith, age 80, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, March 1, 2010.
Born in North Sydney on Oct. 23, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Elizabeth (Bell) Winstanley.
Although recent poor health curtailed her activities, Marion led an active life with many friends and much involvement in organizations and activities. She was a former member of the IODE and Kinettes. She loved playing tennis and bridge with many friends, especially in Peterborough, Ont., and Fredericton and then Saint John, where she lived before recently returning to Cape Breton.
Marion began her business career as executive secretary at J.W. Stephens Ltd. before moving into the ladies fashion industry as a buyer for Jacobson’s Ladies Wear and Oak Hall.
Marion is survived by her three children, Nancy, Inverness, Linda (Scott), Howie Centre, and Greg, Saint John; and her four grandchildren, Crystal Campbell (Lennan), Inverness, Lindsay Rodenkirchen (Darren), Toronto, Shane Gyorfi, Howie Centre, and Kyle Gyorfi, Halifax. Also surviving are her sister, Muriel Porter, Chester, her brother, Alexander (Eileen) Winstanley, North Sydney, and sister, Norma Maydell, Ontario; niece, Lorraine (John) Wheelock, Duncan, B.C.; nephews, Kenneth Winstanley, North Sydney, and Thomas Petite.
She was predeceased by niece, Norma Jean Porter, nephew, Kenneth Petite and her brother-in-law, Garnet W. Porter.
There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place and a graveside service will be held at a later date.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Center, Sydney.
