FOURNIER, George Joseph – It is with sad hearts that the family of George J. Fournier have to announce the passing of a dear husband and loving father at the age of 84 on March 11, 2010, at Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born on July 7, 1925, in Saulnierville Station, Digby Co., he was a son of the late Albanie and Elizabeth (Deveau) Fournier. He is survived by wife of 56 years, Helen (Doucette) Fournier; daughters, Ruth Muise (Bob Robicheau), Yarmouth; Marie (William) Muise, Hammonds Plains; Irene (Joe) D’Eon, Lower East Pubnico; Andrea D’Eon (Roy Rogers), Short Beach; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was predeceased by a daughter Yvonne in infancy; brother, John Fournier; sisters, Mabel Smith and Celina Deveau. As a young man, he was employed by Tupper Warren Lumber and Connor Bros. Fisheries in New Brunswick, as well as the lumber industry. After completing Auto Body Repair in Sydney, he was then employed at Trefry’s Garage for 28 years, then on to Canadian Tire for 11 years until he retired at age 65. George was a dedicated volunteer of Notre Dame of Fatima Church and recipient of the Medal of Merit from the Diocese of Yarmouth. He was well-known to all as a wonderful joke and story teller, and he will be missed by the bingo players at the Youth Centre after 43 years of calling. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Yarmouth. Visitation took place Friday, March 12, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., with prayers at 8 p.m., in Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral mass was held Saturday, March 13, at 11 a.m. from St. Ambrose Cathedral, Father John MacPherson officiated. Interment followed in Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery. A reception followed the interment at Rodd Grand Hotel. Family flowers only, please. Donations in memory may be made to the H.O.P.E. Center or to a charity of your choice.
