The death occurred Monday, May 17, 2010 in St. Martha's Regional Hospital, Antigonish, of the Reverend Hugh Allan MacDonald, priest of the Diocese of Antigonish.
Fr. MacDonald was born in Inverness, the son of Allan R. and Mary (Gillis) MacDonald-Kennedy. He received his early education in Inverness, completed high school at St. Joseph Convent, Mabou and graduated from St. Francis Xavier University in 1939, with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Fr. MacDonald attended Holy Heart Seminary, Halifax, for his theological studies. He was ordained on June 3, 1943, by Archbishop John T. McNally at Holy Heart Seminary Chapel, Halifax.
Fr. MacDonald began his priestly ministry at St. Anthony Parish, Glace Bay, and over time was parish priest at St. Margaret of Scotland, Grand Mira; Stella Maris, Louisbourg; St. Eugene, Dominion; St. Joseph, Port Felix and St. Vincent de Paul, Queensport; St. Joseph, South West Margaree and St. Patrick, North East Margaree; St. Columba, Lakevale and St. George, Georgeville and St. John the Baptist, River Bourgeis. Fr. MacDonald also served for some time in western Canada and the United States.
He was a musically talented man and used his talents as a member of the Liturgical Commission for the diocese and as director at Villa Madonna, Bras d'Or. Fr. MacDonald once directed a choir at a Marian Congress in Vancouver where over 6000 people were in attendance. His musical talents were a gift to the diocese and will be well remembered.
Surviving Fr. MacDonald are his sister, Sr. Mary N. MacDonald, Bethany and two nieces, Glenda and Joyce.
Besides his parents, Fr. MacDonald was predeceased by his brothers, Angus Malcolm (Florence), Joseph (Helen) and Alexander (Laurie).
Visitation will take place 2-4 p.m. Wednesday at MacIsaac Funeral Home, Antigonish. The remains will then be transferred to St. Ninian's Cathedral in time for a Service of Vigil at 7 p.m.
Funeral mass will be 2 p.m. Thursday, May 20, 2010 in St. Ninian's Cathedral with Bishop Brian Dunn presiding. Priests of the diocese are invited to concelebrate. Burial will take place at St. Columba Cemetery, Lakevale.
