Douglas Harkness

It is with great sadness the family of the late Douglas E. Harkness age 71, of Amherst, NS announce his passing on Friday, May 28, 2010 at the QE II Health Sciences Centre, Infirmary Site, Halifax, NS.
Born in Amherst, he was a son of the late Earl and Ethel (Gorvette) Harkness.
He was a highly acclaimed writer and journalist who at the age of 17 was the youngest journalist ever to be a part of the Associated Press where he was awarded and recognized for his coverage of the Springhill mining disaster.
His career was full with a television program in the 1970's and numerous radio broadcast and programs and often called upon by the journalisn industry for political sports and harness racing insight to the issues.
Doug is survived by his wife Donna-Jo, one son Todd Matthew JK of Vancouver, BC, one daughter Heather Jo-Anne (Craig) Pastrana and their children Sophia and Olivia of Maui, two brothers Robert (Audrey) of Ottawa and Monsignor Eugene Harkness of England and one nephew Michael and one niece Melissa.
Visitation will be held on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Campbell's Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst, NS (667-9906) Funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 5, 2010 at 2 p.m. from First Baptist Church, Amherst with Rev. Byron Corkum officiating.
The funeral procession to the Amherst Cemetery will be led by horse and sulky.
Memorial donations in Doug's memory may be made to the charity of your choice.
