Beloved Acadia Professor Dies
1936-2010
Age 74
Wolfville / Amherst: It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Edward Alan Eagles on June 20th in The Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre in Amherst. Ed will be remembered most for the twinkle in his eye and keen sense of humour. Born in Moncton, New Brunswick, the youngest of four children, to Chester and Alva (Stewart) Eagles, he was a graduate of both Mount Allison University and the University of New Brunswick. His career began as a violinist, playing with the New Brunswick Symphony; but his love of English literature called him into the teaching profession. After teaching high school in Oromocto, NB, Ed married Evlyn Todd (a fellow teacher) and soon after accepted a teaching position in the English Department at Acadia University in 1964, a position he held until his retirement in 1996. He was a much loved teacher by his students, receiving the Alumni Award for Excellence in Teaching from the Associated Alumni of Acadia University in 1990. An award which he cherished. After his retirement, he could be found most days fishing with his dear friend and colleague Graham Adams in their canoe. In 2007, Ed and Ev moved to Amherst to be closer to their daughter Amanda and her family. Ed has left behind, his beloved wife Evlyn (South Cumberland Community Care Centre, Parrsboro), his only daughter, Amanda Allaby, son-in-law Dave, his adored grandchildren Julia and Matthew (Amherst); and his older brother Doug (Barbara) Eagles, Qualicom Beach, BC; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will take place at Furlong-Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church Street, Amherst (667-8777), Thursday, June 24th from 6 to 8 pm. A gathering of remembrance will be held in Wolfville at the K.C. Irving Environmental Centre at Acadia University on Monday, June 28, 2010. at 1pm. Donations in memory of Ed can be made to the Acadia University - Ester Clark Wright Archives. www.furlongjones.ca
