It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Marie Francis Xavier Pittard PhD (nee Schaller) on July 1, 2010, at the Toronto General Hospital.
Born in Glace Bay, N.S., she was the daughter of the late John and Catherine (Hunter) Schaller.
Marie was educated in Sydney, at the Nova Scotia Teachers College; in Halifax at Dalhousie University and Saint Mary's University; and at the University of Toronto. Marie has been credited with being the first teacher in Canada to have taught Japanese poetry (in English). Her doctoral studies were pursued in this area and she had several articles published in this field. She was an avid bridge player, having played nationally and internationally.
Marie is survived by her brothers, John, Trenton Ont., and Roddie (Sharon) Schaller, Mira; sister, Olga (Sid) Morrell, Sydney Forks; sister-in-law, Thelma Schaller, Sydney; and several nieces and nephews.
Marie was predeceased by her brothers, Paul, George and John Lewis, and sister, Pauline Graham.
Visitation will be held from 12-2 p.m. Wednesday July 7 at S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. A funeral service will be held immediately after the visitation at 2 p.m. with reception to follow. Interment to take place at Resurrection Cemetery.
