Morley Smith

SMITH, Morley Elmer - Lower Shinimicas, Cumberland Co., passed away on Monday, July 26, 2010, at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre in Upper Nappan. Born June 22 1923 at Lower Shinimicas, he was the youngest son of the late Lloyd and Hattie (Angus) Smith. He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Reta Davidson, in 2007, and his brothers Norman and Victor (Jennie Davidson).
He was a 1950 graduate of the farm program at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College. He devoted his life to farming and caring for the land and forests of his beloved Lower Shinimicas. He started Almoreta Farm where he raised purebred Ayrshires and shipped cream to Brookfield Dairy and later cream and bulk milk to Scotsburn Dairy. Until 1987 he was also a poultry producer and delivered brown eggs to local markets. He was an active member for many years of the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture. His legacy of community service included twenty years as a municipal councilor for rural district no. 3, serving on the Cumberland District Planning Commission, the Board of Health, the ARHS School Board, and the Boards of East Cumberland Lodge and Sunset Home. He was strongly committed to the Co-operative movement where he served for many years as a director of the Baie View Co-op in Amherst Head. He also served for several years as a leader with the Linden 4-H Project Club. Throughout the 1970s and early 80s he was secretary-treasurer of Cumberland Rural Telephone Company. He was a member of Sunrise-Trinity United Church where he served for a time as elder.
He will be deeply missed by his children: sons Alford of Lower Shinimicas, Arthur of Toronto; daughters Karen (John MacLeod) of Dartmouth and Sheila of Lower Shinimicas. Also survived by sister-in-law Mildred Davidson of Pointe Clare, Quebec, as well as a number of nieces and nephews in Canada and the United States.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St., Amherst, NS (902-667-8777) Visitation will be held in Furlong-Jones Chapel (64 Church St., Amherst) on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 29, 2010 at 11 am at Sunrise Trinity United Church at Amherst Head by Rev. Philip Read, with interment in Riverside Cemetery, Tidnish Bridge. Donations may be made to the Sunrise-Trinity United Church or the Cumberland County 4H Council.
