Gwendolyn Cook

Gwendolyn Eileen Cook of St. Thomas and formerly of Saint John, New Brunswick, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, at her daughter Maureen's home at the age of 87. Beloved wife of the late George Cook and loved mother of the late Graeme Cook and his wife Gladys of Napean, Joanne (Sid) Cottell of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, Maureen (Gaetan) Albert of St. Thomas and Susan (Jerry) MacDonnell of St. Peter's N.S. She was the last of seven children. Dear sister-in-law of Claire Johnson of Truro, N.S. Sadly missed by 10 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Gwen was born in Truro, N.S. on May 23rd, 1923, the daughter of the late Loretta (Hayman) and John Johnson. After graduating from High School in Truro she attended Mt. Allison University where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree with Honours in English. She then furthered her degrees in French for her B.E.D. She was a retired school teacher and taught at Three Rivers, Que., Bathurst and Saint John N.B. She was the organist and junior choir director for a number of years at St. Andrew's United Church, Three Rivers and was in the Senior choir in Three Rivers and Bathurst. She was active in the Home and School and Past President in the Three Rivers High School Home and School. Gwen was a life member of the I.O.D.E. Following her husband's death she moved to the Chateau Champlain apartments in Saint John where she made many new friends, then she moved to the Richmond Villa Apartments in St. Peter's for several years and again made many friends and then she moved to St. Thomas and resided with her daughter Maureen. She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed reading and playing the organ.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Saint John, N.B. Remembrances may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Williams Funeral Home, 45 Elgin St., St. Thomas, Ontario in charge of arrangements.
