Following a brief illness, Gus Carrigan, age 91, passed away on Friday, Oct. 22, 2010, at home with his wife and children at his side.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Thomas & Ethel (Johnston) Carrigan.
Gus was a coal miner, working his entire career in No. 12 Colliery.
During the Second World War, he served four years with the Canadian Armed Forces in Newfoundland. Gus was a former member of St. Agnes Church.
In his youth, he was a well known violin player. In the early 1930s he played with the youth orchestra, 'The Kindergarden Seven' at various dances throughout the area and on local radio stations.
Gus is survived by his wife of 65 years, Rose (Stepaniak) Carrigan; one daughter, Cecilia (Larry) Skinner, Owen Sound, Ont.; one son, Gregory (Lynda Moffatt) Carrigan, Port Hawkesbury; five grandchildren, Blayne, Lisa, Stephen, Roselle and Christopher and six great-grandchildren. Gus was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Gus was predeceased by four sisters, Anne (Donald) MacDonald, Ella (Henry) Camerlingo, Elizabeth (Wilfred) Clements and Grace (Clement) MacIsaac; four brothers, John (Mary), Joseph (Cassie), William (Annie) and George (Sophie).
The family would like to especially thank Beth Latham and the palliative care team for their compassion and helping make Gus's last days as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.
Thanks also to Beth's uncle, Willie Fraser for coming to the house to play a few fiddle tunes for Dad. It was truly appreciated. Thank you to the VON nurses for their wonderful care and also to the Red Cross.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home in New Waterford.
The funeral mass will be officiated by Rev. Doug MacDonald and will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2010, at 10 a.m. in St. Leonard's Church, Mt. Carmel Avenue. Interment will take place at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. All are invited to join the family for a reception in the parish hall on Convent Street.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations be made to the palliative care unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in memory of Gus.
