G. Melvin Barclay

(November 22, 1931 - November 2, 2010) - G. Melvin Barclay of Upper Kintore, NB passed away suddenly on November 2, 2010 at the age of 78. He was the son of Ethel (Flewelling) and James W. Barclay. Melvin graduated from Perth High School in 1949, the New Brunswick Teachers College in 1951, the Nova Scotia Agriculture College, Degree Course with high honours in 1961, received his B. Sc. (Agr) with honours from McGill University in 1964 and graduated with high honours from the University of Maine with the Degree of Master of Science in Agronomy (M.S.Ag) in 1972. He taught school for 10 years before joining the New Brunswick Department of Agriculture. He was appointed Officer-In-Charge of the Bon Accord Elite Seed Potato Farm in 1971. In 1986 he moved to the position of District Agriculturist for Victoria County. After his retirement in 1996, he continued to play an active role in the agricultural industry. As a Professional Agrologist he received many awards including the following: "The Fellow of the Agricultural Institute of Canada", The Distinguished Services to N.B. Agricultural Award and The James Robb Award. His highest achievement was to be inducted into the Potato World Hall of Recognition. Throughout his career Melvin was the author of many agricultural publications. Melvin played a vital role in his church and the Scotch Colony. His invaluable contributions will be greatly missed. He is survived by many cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his parents and an infant brother Malcolm.
Relatives and friends are invited for visitation at White's Funeral Home 20 Industrial Park St. Perth-Andover on Saturday, November 6th from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. Funeral Service will be held from Saint James United Church, Perth-Andover on November 7th at 2:00pm with Rev. Susan Fleming officiating. Interment to follow at the Upper Kintore Cemetery. Donations in memory of Melvin may be made to the Upper Kintore Cemetery Fund or a charity of the donor's choice.
