Harold Sowers

1921-2010 - On November 13, 2010, Harold D E Sowers of Oak Avenue, Fredericton NB, passed away at home peacefully and with the dignity he deserved with his family by his side at the age of 89. Harold was born on May 21, 1921 and was a veteran of WWII. Harold was predeceased by his first wife, Mildred A. Young, parents, George and Sarah Purdy Jane (Griffith), siblings, Bessie, Ethel, Charles, Geraldine, Georgie and Basil and great grandaughter, Kaitlin Seymour. Harold is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Nora Annie Sowers, children Malcolm (Iris) Sowers, Linda (Raymond) Clark, Susan Willis and fiancé Clayton Doige; four grandchildren, Lori, Stephanie, Holly and Heather, and six great grandchildren, Marissa, Samantha, Tyler, Kaylin, Brooke and Emily. Harold will also be lovingly remembered by special niece Judy MacKay and great-niece Bobby Jo MacKay.
Company Sgt. Major Harold Sowers joined the Carleton and York regiment on March 4, 1940 and served his country in the battles throughout England, Sicily, Italy, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany and was one of the brave men who liberated Holland at the end of the second world war. In 1995, Harold was honoured to be chosen to represent the Carleton and York Regiment in Holland for the 50th Anniversary of the Liberation of Holland. After the war, Harold worked until his retirement in 1988 with Diamond Construction (1961) Ltd. in Fredericton. Some of Harold and Nora’s happiest times were at their camp, where they found lasting friendships with others in the area and Harold could enjoy a bit of hunting.
Visitation will be held at McAdam's Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 17th from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #4 will hold a tribute at 7 pm. Funeral service will be held in the J.A. McAdam Memorial Chapel on Thursday, November 18th at 2 pm with Rev. J. W. Beesley officiating. Interment is to take place in the Fredericton Rural Cemetery Extension. In lieu of flowers, donations could be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Lakeville Corner War Memorial Fund or a charity of the donors choice. www.mcadamsfh.com 458-9170
