SWIM, John Franklin, 86, Lockeport, passed away at home Thursday, December 16, 2010, in the presence of his family. Born in Halifax on May 1, 1924, he was a son of the late John W and Sarah (Gates) Swim. John received an education from King's Edgehill in Windsor and Acadia University in Wolfville. He was a veteran from World War II, having served overseas with the 8th New Brunswick Hussars. He was stationed in Holland at the time of their liberation. John devoted many years to environmental issues including projects relating to neutralizing the acidity levels in local rivers and lakes, creating habitable conditions for the ongoing survival of native fish. He was instrumental in the formation of the East Shelburne County Rivers Association and worked for many years on a project with recent success resulting in maintaining a steady water flow in the Jordan River. John enjoyed salmon fishing trips in Newfoundland, was an avid fly fisherman, big game and bird hunter. The fruits of his passion for vegetable gardening were a popular addition to the family dinner table. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Elizabeth (Rogers) and three children: Melanie; John "Jack" W. (Karen); Lisa, (David MacLeod) and three grandchildren, Matthew, Ryan and Michael. He was predeceased by his brother Farley. Cremation has taken place under the direction of H.M. Huskilson's Funeral Home, Lockeport. A memorial service was held on Tuesday, December 21, from Holy Cross Anglican Church in Lockeport with Reverend Norma Mitchell officiating.
