Gordon Jackson 'Griff' Griffith, 90, Port Hawkesbury, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones on Friday, Dec. 24, 2010, in Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston.
Gordon was born in Saint John, N.B., March 6, 1920, a son of the late William and Mary (Doran) Griffith.
He served in the Merchant Navy in the Second World War and was employed with British American (Gulf) Oil for 33 years in Chatham, N.B., and Dartmouth before retiring in Port Hawkesbury in 1975. He was employed with Seaboard Liquid Carriers until 1980. Griff enjoyed bowling, cards with family and friends and all creatures great and small. He was a member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Port Hawkesbury, and a member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 43, Port Hawkesbury.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Marie Rita (Kenny); sons, Gordon L. (Helen Ann), Long Point, Reg (Ann), Dartmouth, Daniel (Donna), Moncton, N.B.; daughter, Dawn (Randal) Power, Port Hawkesbury; brother, David (Mary), Saint John, N.B.; sisters, Joan (Ron) Perry, Ottawa, Ont., Jeanne (Bud) O'Brien, Frederiction, N.B.; grandchildren, Aaron, Travis, Jesse, Andrew, Lindsay, Adele, Craig; and many special nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by brothers, Patrick, Sholly, Paul, William, John F., Stephen and Morris Anthony and sister, Margaret.
Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today (Monday) with a vigil service at 2 p.m., and a legion service at 7 p.m., in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Port Hawkesbury, with Fr. Andrew Boyd officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery at a later date.
Donations may be made in Griff's memory to the St. Joseph's Cemetery Fund.
