William (Bill) Duncan

DUNCAN - William Keir Duncan (Bill) Duncan, William Keir (Bill) Bill passed away January 1st, 2011 at the Prairie Health Care Centre in Cabri, SK at the age of 89. Bill was born March 25th, 1921 on the Duncan homestead near Lancer, SK. He was the youngest of three boys of William Sr. and Agnes (Stenhouse). He attended Hill School until farming and ranching became his life. He helped his father farm a lot of land with horse drawn machinery, which began his life long love of horses. Around 1929 Bills parents moved into the Sandhills and starting ranching sheep and cattle. Bill became a great sheep shearer and entered competitions as far away as Toronto. Rodeo was another passion of Bill's. He competed for a number of years in Calf roping and wild cow milking. The Lancer Rodeo, the longest running Rodeo in CCA history, is still held each year on Bill's land. In 1958 Bill purchased his first Quarter Horse, which began 30 years of breeding and raising horses. Horses bred on the Duncan Ranch were amongst the winners many times in Stakes and Futurities in the early 80s and Bill's horses went as far away as Italy. Bill also had bred and raised registered herefords. He expanded and mixed his herd over the years and had a few hundred head when he retired. On October 3Oth 1970 he married Esther Schnieder, and along with her two children Debbie and Stacey, built a new house and riding arena at the present location of the Duncan Ranch. They added two more children, Bonnie and Justin and continued to live a great ranch life for several years. The family participated in Quarter Horse and Cutting Horse Shows during these years and had much success and enjoyment in cutting, western pleasure, and gymkhana events. They held numerous riding clinics, team roping events, and even a few horse shows at the ranch. Branding time was always a special day enjoyed by many friends and neighbors. Bill is survived by children Debbie (Lyle) Guenther of Outlook, Stacey (Jen) of Abbey, Bonnie (Randy) Doige of Aberdeen, and Justin (Vickie) along with all the grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Bill was predeceased by his parents William and Agnes, his two brothers Charles and Ken, and his wife Esther. Bill had a great love of life. Music and dancing were some of his great joys. In his younger years he played the guitar and was often heard singing and whistling his favorite tunes as he went about his work. He loved working on the ranch and was proud and excited in each of his new endeavors. Everyone who knew him enjoyed his company and quick wit. He had many fond memories of his family and appreciated the land and the lifestyle it provided. He was happiest watching his children ride and participate in ranch life. Bills "Celebration of Life" will be held on Saturday January 8th, 2011 at The Abbey Community Hall at 2:00 PM. The same evening family and friends are also invited to a social gathering at the Hall. Funeral arrangements are in care of Culham/Bowers Funeral Home of Swift Current. Culham/Bowers Funeral Home were entrusted with the arrangements.
