It is with the heaviest of hearts that we, the family of Catherine Dorothy 'Dot' Vickers, announce her passing at the Northside General Hospital on Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011, following a brief illness.
Born in North Sydney, Dot was the daughter of the late John W. and Christina (Hood) Young. She was a member of Immaculate Conception parish, Sydney Mines.
Before her marriage, our mom worked as a salesclerk in various stores: The 5 & 10, Astephen's and Maloneys. She loved hockey, was a Blue Jays fan, enjoyed a good game of cards, and was a wonderful housekeeper and baker. Our mom was a devoted wife and mother, strong in her faith, who loved to be surrounded by her family and friends with a good cup of tea and goodies on the table.
Mom is survived by her sons, David. Sydney Mines, Tim, Port Credit; daughters, Sharon Johnston, Sydney and Cathy (Danny) Smith, Sydney Mines. She is also survived by her grandsons, who were Nanny's pride and joy, Craig (Jenni Cook) Johnston, Adam Johnston, Matthew and Tyler Smith; one great-grandson, Finlay Johnston. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends, who mourn her loss.
Dot is also survived by her sister, Rita, North Sydney; godson, Allan Gray, Mississauga; dear friend, Regina Jobes and special cousin, Kate Murphy, whose daily telephone calls brightened Mom's day.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Sid; sister Julia; brothers, Jim, Lloyd and Eldridge and niece, Yvonne.
Visitation for Dorothy Vickers will be held in the J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, on Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A celebration of her life will take place on Monday at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. Thomas John officiating. A reception will be held in the Centennial Room, following the mass.
