It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Joan Elizabeth (Johnson) Marshall on Monday, Feb. 1, 2011, at the Strait Richmond Hospital in Evanston surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Antigonish, Joan was the daughter of the late John T. Johnson and Margaret (nee Paul) (Dr. Granny) of Eskasoni.
Left to mourn is her son, David Robert Marshall of Potlotek and former husband, Lindsay Robert Marshall of Potlotek. Left to mourn are her Aunt Caroline Gould, We'qoqma'q Also left to mourn are brothers, Albert Julian, Gerald Johnson, Gerard (Regina) Johnson, Thomas (Elizabeth) and daughters, Carol (Russell) of Chapel Island, Lottie Johnson, Elizabeth (Ryan) Paul, Patricia Dennis, Mary C. (Allan) GooGoo.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, Arthur Julian, Ralph Julian and sister, Linda Moore. Also surviving are her godchildren, Arnold Paul, Lynn Margaret Johnson, Kateri Sappier, Pauline Marshall, Dylan Goo Goo. John Darrell Marshall, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She worked as editor of the well respected now defunct MicMac News which was based in Membertou during 1970s and 1980s. Joan was also an executive assistant to the president of the Union of Nova Scotia Indians, she was also a vice president of Nova Scotia Native Women's Association. She had served as a member of the Strait Regional School Board Mi'kmaq Representative. Joan was also a travel agent in both Boston and in San Francisco.
She was a consummate volunteer and was devoted to her Catholic faith culminating in visits to Rome, Lourdes and Medjugorje. Joan was an eucharistic minister at Immaculate Conception and a member of MI'kmaq Grand Council Choir.
Visitation will be held at her Godson John Darrell Marshall's home on 16 Chapel Island Rd. in Potlotek beginning today, Feb. 3, 2011, at 3 p.m., for immediate family and at 5 p.m. for the public. Mass of Christian Farewell will be held Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Barra Head with Fr. Maridoss officiating. Burial to follow in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Barra Head.
