It is with great sadness that we, the family announce the sudden death of Beth (Romard) Smith on Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2011, at Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born Nov. 1, 1922, in Inverness, N.S., she was a daughter of the late Steve and Josephine (LeBlanc) Romard.
Beth will be fondly remembered as one who gave unlimited time to her family and friends. While in her late 40s she began working at New Waterford Consolidated Hospital and soon enjoyed her position as cook. She remained working until her retirement and often missed the camaraderie of 'the girls at work'. "The Grandmother" as she was referred to by both family and friends, enjoyed watching the Blue Jays playing baseball, gardening, and a good game of cards. She will be remembered by many as one who devoted part of her day to pray and she was often asked to pray for loved ones of both her family and friends.
Left to mourn her passing is her daughter, Florence Smith; her grandsons, who adored her as a parental figure, Darnell (Laura) Young, New Waterford, Nolan (Jennifer) Young, Edmonton, Alta. Beth was ever so proud of her only great-grandchild, Liam who held a special place in her heart; brothers, John-Ponoch (Theresa) Romard, Brookline, Mass., and Charlie (Ripper) Romard, New Waterford, N.S; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and many great friends.
Besides her parents, Beth was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Smith and her sisters, Mill, Lucy and Nellie and a brother, Dan. She also lost her beloved son-in-law, Howard Jones in March 2010.
Cremation for Beth has taken place. A mass to celebrate Beth's life will be held Monday February 7th at 10 am in the Parish Church of St. Leonard's formerly known as Mount Carmel Church, New Waterford, with Fr. Douglas MacDonald officiating. Interment will take place at a later date. A luncheon will be held immediately following in the Parish Hall 310 Convent St.
